McAfee is a long-time player in the antivirus industry. The company was established in 1988. is also well-known for its firewall, antispam, file encryption and public key infrastructure product lines. It is most well-known, however, for its anti-virus and is a major player in the market. Security suites that it offers provide complete protection against viruses and malware and are backed by a $1,000,000 guarantee against identity theft.
All of McAfee’s plans include a fully-featured malware scanner that will block the entry of malware into your computer system and kill or quarantine the viruses that have already infiltrated it. Its real-time engine prevents malware files from downloading and redirects, encrypts and decrypts data so that your internet activity can’t be intercepted.
McAfee consistently scored highly in our tests for both the AV-Test 0-day test, as well as our malware protection test. Also, it passed our privacy tests, scoring 100 percent in all of the categories.
The suite’s interface is clear and simple to navigate. Accessing features such as parental controls and identity theft protections is an issue, though. They’re siloed into separate menus on the dashboard. Support isn’t always easy to find. The McAfee Community Forum is in operation, but Techmaster Concierge will be required to assist users with more complex issues.
The only major disappointment was that McAfee’s scan did not clean up some unwanted files on our test systems. It doesn’t permit you to drag and drop a particular file or folder into the suite to be scanned like many of its competitors. This is a major no-no for a security suite that costs this much.
